About McKenzie Elementary

Mr. Eunice Sikes McKenzie, son of pioneer Mesquite settlers, attended Mesquite schools. As an adult, Mr. McKenzie was a banker, starting at Guaranty State Bank and later at First State Bank and First National Bank of Mesquite. He later moved to the new Grove State Bank where he worked until his retirement.

ES McKenzieMr. McKenzie's main interest was in the Mesquite Independent School District. He was elected to the school board in 1926 and served for 24 years as a member, Secretary, and finally President of the board. For his devotion to the education of the children of Mesquite, McKenzie Elementary School was named in his honor.

E. S. McKenzie Elementary opened in the fall of 1980. Howard Payne was the first principal and remained principal at McKenzie for eighteen years. Mr. Payne announced his retirement in 1998 and Wencie Byrd was named as McKenzie's new principal. Wencie Byrd retired in 2003 and Katrina Horn-Hasley was named McKenzie's new principal. Aimee Lewis was named principal beginning in the fall of 2007.
